Art Deco is sometimes referred to simply as Deco and has a long history stretching back to France before World War I. Art Deco influences the design of modern housing, architecture, furniture and clothing. The style emerged during the period of Art Deco Architecture, which occurred between the 1890s and the end of the First World War. Art Deco style was typified by bold, luxurious homes, often clad in gold or bright red paint. Some of the most famous homes designed during this time period include those in Paris, Los Angeles, New York City, Miami Beach and Chicago.

A large number of art-style buildings can be found throughout the world. Many were commissioned by wealthy individuals and are a rarity, being built as a permanent structure only. Others were commissioned as works of art, with their owners often choosing specific themes for the structure and decorative details. More commonly, art style buildings feature exotic designs and influences from the automotive, electronics, and architecture industries. Some examples of these would include the Le Corbusier Gothic revival style home in Paris, the Le Corbusier House in London, and the Disney Home in Los Angeles. The style can also be traced to various Hollywood movie scenes, especially those filmed in or around Los Angeles.

Art Deco architecture, like its modern equivalent, relies on high quality materials and workmanship. Although the style had its roots in traditional Italian art design, it moved away from using precious metals and towards glass in the later years. Although the designs may have included elements of natural materials and Roman or Greek-inspired furnishings, the Art Deco style used in modern housing is a far cry from what it originally looked like.

One of the biggest influences of Art Deco architecture is the Automobile industry, particularly the concept of moving and automaking. Many of the designs utilized in the designs of the period were heavily influenced by the automotive industry and concepts were even implemented into certain parts of the later Art Deco design. Examples of these would include the double curtain window, which was common place in the New York Stock Exchange in the early part of the 1900’s. Moving away from the typical metal and glass designs in the age of the automobile, Art Deco architects concentrated their attention on other materials including asbestos for window dressings, plaster on the exterior of windows, and wood for the flooring.

Although there are many similarities between the Art Deco and Modern styles, there are also many differences. One of the biggest differences is the emphasis on individual expression through architecture. Art Deco homes often focus on the form and movement of the building as a whole, while Modern focuses on function and symmetry. Another noticeable difference is the actual use of color. Art Deco houses often use large amounts of red, while Modern uses much lighter colors and uses a lot of gray.

Both of these styles are popular today. However, the popularity of the Art Deco style has decreased as the popularity of the Modern style has risen. The recent resurgence in interest in Art Deco designs is likely due to the new focus the public has placed on historic architecture. Many people like to imagine themselves living in an older world, one that hasn’t been completely overtaken by the modern society that they are a part of. These types of homes offer the chance to live in an era that may not be fully appreciated by most people today.
